The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requiring the manufacturer of the active ingredient of Nexium to provide discounts to consumers for all the products sold in the U. S. that contain the active ingredient, or as the agency instructs consumers. The FDA will continue to review the information for drug safety and efficacy during the period July 1 to June 30.
Nexium, the active ingredient in Nexium, was listed on the National Formulary of the FDA’s drug label for the most common brand-name prescription medication (esomeprazole magnesium).
The FDA also will continue to review all prescription medications on the NDA’s label for brand name or generic versions.
If the drugmaker allows the manufacturers of the active ingredient to share their information about its data and safety information with the FDA, the agency will continue to review that information during the period July 1 to June 30.
“This is a major step forward in encouraging manufacturers to develop new products and share their data and safety information with the FDA,” said Steven Galson, chairman of the division of pharmaceuticals and a vice president, and president, U. Food and Drug Administration. “This will help manufacturers build new products, share their data and safety information, and then continue to market those products.”
The agency will continue to monitor the data during the period. If any changes are made, the agency will issue a new drug label that states that the drug contains the active ingredient. It also will provide the information to the FDA that the drug contains the active ingredient in both brand name and generic forms of the drug.
In addition, the agency will review the information that the company has provided to the FDA for safety information and efficacy data, as well as information regarding the use of Nexium in children and other indications. The FDA will also review the information for the use of the drug as a part of a new drug application (NDA).
